Enjoyed seeing the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie in theaters the other day. It was visually fantastic and a funny movie overall, in spite of all the nay-sayer previews reports that came out. That said, however, I grant you that I have not gotten round to finishing the book and yet the film was still was not as funny as I had hoped. Still, I did enjoy it a great deal and look forward to seeing it again on DVD.

eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on DVD the other day and enjoyed it tremendously. The acting is great, and it’s particularly refreshing to see Jim Carrey in a dramatic role. I’ve never been much enamored of all his annoying comedies, but I did enjoy The Truman Show and liked him in this movie a great deal more. I applaud actors like Jim Carrey and Jamie Foxx who can make the cross from comedy to drama and back again, it’s always exciting to see versatile actors in roles that are new and different for them. Anyway, the movie was a touching story and quite enjoyable, I highly recommend it.
firefly
Just watched the pilot episode of Firefly tonight, and it was fantastic. Easily the best sci-fi show I’ve seen in a long time. I’m loving the combination of wild west and outer space, they’re pulling it off very well. Firefly was a sci-fi series on Fox that got messed up and cut short by the network. There is a full season DVD available with episodes in their intended order (as opposed to their air order) and a movie in the works, to be released September 30th. The trailer looks sweet.
donnie darko
Just watched Donnie Darko for the first time, with my neighbor Kody. It is one of the most messed-up movies with one of the most depressing endings i’ve ever seen. In short, it was awesome. Not that I need my movies to be messed up and depressing, but this was just incredible, and the ending, while so sad, just seemed so necessary. Watch it.
random tunes
Some good tunes I’ve just found recently:
Counting Crows – Mr. Jones
Eric Prydz – Call On Me (remix of Steve Winwood’s Valerie, also a cool song)
Gary Jules – Mad World (from Donnie Darko, creepy in the movie)
Sweet bands:
Ben Folds
The Killers
sin city
Saw Sin City this afternoon and it was just as awesome as everyone says. The only thing that makes it mildly unsatisfying as a movie is that it is composed of vignettes, rather than a single unified story line. They alleviate this somewhat by capping both ends of the flick with Bruce Willis’s and Josh Hartnett’s stories and interlacing characters in several stories. Anyway, the style was beautiful and fantastically comic-booky and, although I haven’t read the comics myself, I’m told the movie is very true to the comicbooks, so that’s always good. It’s a bloody (literally) blast, and a terrific work of cinema.
the office
Lukewarm scripts, tepid jokes – yesterday I watched the first two episodes of The Office and I don’t plan to watch any more. Interestingly, though, it seems to take place in Scranton, Pennsylvania, which is where some of my family lives. Also, I’ve heard the British version is better…
life on a stick
I just watched the premiere of this show and it was simply the best episode of television comedy that I have seen in a long time. It had heart, honesty, and was genuinely funny. Not only that, but it had a certain feel-good quality that went right along with me laughing my ass off.
magic eightball
I need to get me a real one of these…
grey’s anatomy
Watched the premiere of this new television series following a group of surgical interns in their residency and enjoyed it. It didn’t blow me away, but I liked the dynamics between the characters and the fact that they’re all interns. Didn’t like their forced emphasis on calling it “the game,” but I did think the acting and direction was pretty good. I’ll watch it a couple more times and see if I continue to like it. I also like the title, which is a play on the main character’s name and the seminal medical textbook of the same name (but with an A, bah).
Current recording list, incidentally:
Arrested Development
24
Project Greenlight
Lost
South Park
8 Simple Rules
Inside the Actors Studio
UEFA/MLS/World Cup qualifier/Premiere League soccer games
and now Grey’s Anatomy, of course.
Interesting tidbit from IMDB: Patrick Dempsey, who plays Dr. Shepherd (you know him from Sweet Home Alabama), “At the time of his first marriage he was 21 and his bride was 48.” Yuck.
